About Vizslas
The Vizsla is a medium sized hunting dog most commonly recognized for its golden rust coat. The head is wide between the ears, with a moderate stop and a muzzle that is deep and square. The eyes and nose should match the coat, and should not be any color other than brown; the Vizsla's expression is keen and inquisitive. Ears are long and silky, and hang near the cheeks. The neck and body are lean and muscular, giving the dog's body a light but powerful appearance. The legs are strong and sturdy; forequarters are straight and hindquarters are well developed with angulated hocks and stifles. The tail is carried level and docked one third off; feet are compact and catlike. The coat lies close to the body and is dense, smooth and short. The coat is solid in various shades of golden rust; occasionally, one will see some white markings on the dog's chest.
In Hungarian the word Vizsla means alert and responsive. Vizslas are very smart, trainable, and eager to please but are sensitive dogs who usually do not respond well to harsh training methods. The Vizslas are known as Velcro dogs because they will follow you from room to room, sleep next to you and lay their heads in your lap at every opportunity. Vizslas are not dogs that can be left out in the yard. They were bred to be loyal, affectionate house dogs as well as hunting and field dogs, and they want to be with people. Vizslas are very versatile and simply love to learn. They love challenges and will thrive in an enriched environment. Whether agility, conformation, field trials, jogging partners and other outdoor activities, or just curling up on the couch with you, Vizslas love to do it all! They will adapt easily to city living but will require long walks and play time to get their energy out. They are reliable with children and really fit in well with the entire family. The Vizsla's coat is very low maintenance. They will shed their coat in the spring and in the fall. A quick brushing weekly helps to keep the coat healthy. The Vizsla makes a great pet for those who do not want their house to smell "doggy." When given the proper care and attention, Vizslas are a wonderful breed to have. Once you fall in love with a Vizsla your life will change for the better.
